How sad is it that people in the US have to worry that they can't speak their mind. We make fun of Russia but we're becoming increasingly like them. Shame on us.
I was meant to travel to the US last year, for a wedding & to see a friend out there but didn’t due to Personal Circumstances.
I don’t really have any desire to go currently. Not that the UK is much better at the moment, especially if you’re transgender or an immigrant.
Here the rise of right-wing populism has scared the government into policies on immigration, such that it hasn’t really made much difference having a traditionally left-centre party in power. It’s all very sad.
I read your description of the political situation in the UK, and my first thought was the Spider-Man pointing meme with our two nations representing the Spider-Men. While I'd prefer to have center-left leadership at the helm rather than far-right wackadoos, either way, ineffectual stewardship of the government marked by austerity programs and an inattentiveness (or intentional blindness) to the underlying causes of everyday people's suffering undermines public confidence in institutions and paves the way for electoral disaster. Ultimately, I feel like progressivism has to win out, but if it takes too long, I worry the damage will be done.
Yeah, I keep telling myself that nothing lasts forever and that such things come in cycles/waves/phases so hopefully there will be brighter days ahead.
Ah, the question we all must ask ourselves eventually - is a Gogoat really worth the potential trouble?
Seriously though, what a mess. It does feel weird to be actively advocating against a traipse in from out-of-town because "you never know." I will be eschewing the event to keep my streak of "always doing that" alive, and instead will be enjoying the soothing sounds of "Weird Al" Yankovic as his tour kicks off in Las Vegas haha
Yeah, even in a vacuum, Weird Al sounds like a better use of your time. I have no plans to travel abroad anytime soon, but if I were to have them, I'd have to prepare to endure my embarrassment of being an American while in another country. It's a shameful state of affairs right now.

Sad. Infuriating. Would be great if we had an opposition party with a backbone to stand up to Trump & Co. Oh, well. 🤷♂️

But it’s very bleak whilst you’re living it!
