Sigh...I really don't know. I get the sense Niantic doesn't think its success is a given. At least for me, their advertising is aggressive, though that could be purely algorithmic.
That said, their emphasis seems to be more on lapsed players than absolute newbies, and I just have to question their strategies for attracting new players and retaining them. I'm paraphrasing, but the guy behind PvPoke said Niantic keeps inventing more convoluted ways of trying to drive engagement rather than, like, making a good game. It's a sad embrace of tactics that are all too common in the mobile gaming sphere.
