Well heaven save us from people with agendas. People who try to write about products should be as truthful as possible. Well some people have no scruples!

A lack of scruples and a lack of research, tbh. The second video especially seems unstructured, which does bolster his credibility somewhat that he appears spontaneous and genuine. That doesn't excuse going off of vibes rather than doing your due diligence, though.

If you're going to invoke Niantic’s data collection practices and discussions about private equity/revenue, you should approach these topics with seriousness. At the very least, you shouldn't glaze Niantic for leveraging that user data to maximize Pokémon GO's sale price. Like, what are we doing here?

This is probably the case for any YouTuber with a significant following for a niche product. They are almost always regular folks who amassed a fanbase and the idea of being "close" to the brand as well as making a living off of it makes the bias obvious.

In a perfect world, people who have influence would be like, ya know, using it for good. But whether it's Bezos or a career YouTuber, that's almost never the case. Being a dissenting voice, not just to be a hater, but because you have a genuine desire for the thing you like to be better, is rarely a profitable premise. And it feeds into the audience then being dismissive of contrary takes, defending a brand like it's their religion instead of appreciating the people who are trying to make things better for them.

Hm. That sounds a lot like politics too, huh?

It sounds *a lot* like politics, yes it does. At least for the viewer that reflexively defends against critics, I think there's a sort of cognitive dissonance going on. They want to love the game and not feel compromised in their values, so they reject anything that would complicate that worldview. You can only put lipstick on a Lechonk for so long, though. More discerning viewers will immediately see through the marketing ploy, and eventually, even the superfans will diminish in number.
